A late game pass to Jerricho Cotchery sealed the deal, but Sophomore JaMarcus Russell led a revamped Rakeville University squad to their first win of the season over Weymouth.

“Russell looked good out there,” said Head Coach Drew Bledsoe in the postgame news conference. “He controlled the offense and didn’t make any mistakes to hurt the team early. Then, when we needed him to step up, JaM took us down the field for two big touchdown passes.”

Early in the game the Grays relied on their running game, with Sophomore Marshawn Lynch and Freshman Kevin Smith crossing the goal line on successive drives. Fellow sophomore Calvin Johnson was Russell’s main target on the day, making seven catches for 107 yards.

“They made it easy for me to make big plays,” said Russell. “The backs would hit them hard short, then Calvin would find a seam downfield and I’d just toss it to him. It’s like the Islanders were still in High School.”

Weymouth proved to be a good warmup as they head down to the University of Mexico next week to face the defending champion Wildcats.
